London doesn’t do things quietly. It’s one of the biggest, busiest and most layered cities in the world, and the easiest mistake is trying to see all of it at once. Benita’s tour takes a smarter approach - a route that moves from East London out through the city’s most iconic landmarks, showing you how to get around on London transport without losing half the day to it.
It starts in Stratford, in East London, at Westfield - one of the largest urban shopping centres in Europe and the gateway to a part of the city that’s transformed almost completely since the 2012 Olympics. From there, the tour heads to Canary Wharf, London’s glass-and-steel financial district rising out of a former dockland, where the skyline looks like it landed from another century entirely. The contrast with the rest of East London is striking, and that contrast is very much the point.
Greenwich and the O2 sit further along the river - the O2 is the giant white dome on the Thames that started life as the Millennium Dome in 2000 and is now one of the busiest entertainment venues in the world. Greenwich itself is the home of the Prime Meridian, the Royal Observatory and some of the best views of the London skyline from the park above the town.
Great Buildings, Great views
London Bridge is next - less famous than its neighbour but arguably more historic, with Borough Market just below it and the medieval lanes of Southwark a short walk away. Tower Bridge follows and earns every photograph: the Victorian Gothic towers, the glass walkway above the Thames, the view up and down the river in both directions. One of the most recognisable structures in the world, and still a working bridge.
The Sky Garden at the top of the Walkie Talkie Building on Fenchurch Street is one of London’s better free secrets - a public garden on the 35th floor with a 360-degree panorama of the city. Book in advance, it fills up. Oxford Street brings the tour back to ground level and full London energy: one of the busiest shopping streets in Europe, loud and relentless, with every major retailer and a few independent gems if you know where to look. The tour loops back to Stratford Westfield to finish, which makes the whole thing a proper London loop - east to west and back again, with the Thames as the thread running through it.
